Introduction: Building the Bathroom Bench for Elders
Showering is one of the most relaxing times of the day, giving you a chance to clear your thoughts. However, for some people, it can be potentially dangerous. If you live with older people, it can be harder for them to keep their balance, causing them to slip over. Thankfully, this doesn’t have to happen. You will be able to build a bench, keeping them safe so they can have a calming shower.
Four pieces of treated lumber
Treated pine, at least ¾ inches long
Shower Pan Liner (Optional)
Step 1: Measure the Bench Space
The first thing that you’ll need to do is decide how big you want your bench seat to be. You’ll also need to decide where you want to place the bench seat. You’ll need to put it against a tiled wall, this will ensure that it will be secure. Once you know where you want to put the bench seat, use a measuring tape to record the dimensions.
Step 2: Cut the Wood
The next thing that you’ll need to do is cut the timber. You’ll need to use the dimensions created in step one. As you’re making the box, you’ll need to make sure that one side is slightly lower than the other. This will ensure that water drains off the bench.
Step 3: Make a Wooden Box
Once you’ve cut the wood, you’ll need to start assembling it. Lay the two longer pieces parallel and the two smaller pieces parallel, to form a rectangular box. To assemble the box, you’ll need to use some waterproof wood glue in each corner. Then, nail it in place and wipe away any excess. Wait for the glue to dry before moving on to the next step.
Step 4: Add the Pine
Once you've got the box assembled, you’ll need to add the treated pine. These are nailed inside the box, to form the seat. In most cases, this will be a suitable seat.
However, if you want to add some extra luxury, you can put the shower pan liner over the seat. This is a waterproof membrane, protecting the wood so the bench lasts longer.
Step 5: Install the Seat
At this point, you’ll be ready to put the seat into the shower. There are two ways of doing this, depending on how per-meant you want it to be.
First, you can use heavy-duty screws to attach the seat to the wall. If you’re planning to do this, make sure to check the wall first, so you don’t hit any pipes. Also, make sure that you’re screwing it into a stud, to support the weight of the seat.
Alternatively, you can screw legs onto the seat. If you do this, you’ll be able to remove it whenever you want.
